CRAFT > QUILLING

Roll it…Shape it… Glue it

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated and then glued together to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles etc.
Its an age old craft form originating in 14th century in Europe. It was a very cost effective alternative to much expensive gold filigree to decorate religious objects and book covers. Later in 18th and 19th century women in England used this paper filigree art style to decorate tea containers and furniture. In other countries also people decorated candle stands, trays etc by Quilling.
It starts with rolling a strip of paper into a coil and then pinching the coil into shapes that can be glued together. There are advanced techniques and different sized paper that are used to create 3D miniatures, abstract art, flowers and portraits among many things.
From then to now, the process has been very much same. Now the Quilling Patterns have got more creative and customized. This all has been possible because special Quilling Tools are available these days. Today, Quillers are found everywhere in the world. From small tags, greeting cards, decorating personal accessories, jewelry, home décor to wall-sized museum installations, Quilling has always been a crafters delight.
